Not to be outdone by last year's landmark entries into the genre, has seen two incredible Soulslikes arrive within a month of each other. However, outside both titles being new Soulslikes inspired by the games that helped to define the growing genre, Lords of the Fallen and Lies of P couldn't be more different in how they approach the intertwined elements of accessibility and difficulty. The tense, methodical combat and ultra-difficult boss fights that are part of FromSoftware's games are trademarks that have come to define the Soulslike genre, with similar titles often judged based on the nature of their encounter design. After some players found themselves frustrated at their inability to progress past certain skill checks in Soulslikes , a conversation over balancing difficulty and accessibility began to pervade the discourse surrounding the genre. While Lies of P is most certainly one of the more difficult Soulslikes available and offers a significant challenge, Lords of the Fallen lowers its skill floor and provides plenty of tutorials to potentially be a great entry point for those previously turned off by the genre. Contrary to later games like Bloodborne which favors aggressive "push-forward" combat and features a health recovery mechanic that rewards it or Sekiro which almost exclusively requires players to master its complex parry mechanic , the Souls series from which the Soulslike genre gets its name provides players with three defensive abilities in each encounter.

Souls fans are eating well this year, with Lies of P and Lords of the Fallen releasing in short succession of one another just a month after Armored Core 6. Both games are excellent additions to the Soulslike subgenre, and both have lots to offer, with tightly designed combat, challenging boss fights, and a whole host of visually stunning environments to explore. While being somewhat mechanically similar, featuring many tropes of the Souls series like limited healing items and checkpoints that respawn enemies, Lies of P and Lords of the Fallen are very different beneath the surface and appeal to two completely different types of Souls fans. Like Sekiro , it strongly rewards players for executing perfect parries but blocking and rolling are viable too. Enemy and boss design is universally top-notch, with every foe bringing something new to the table. Elites and bosses, in particular, are ruthlessly aggressive and as early as the third or fourth area, they start to attack wildly and unpredictably with brutally punishing combos. You can detach weapon heads from handles and mix and match them to your preference. My biggest criticism of P is its linearity: The whole game is a one-track affair from start to finish , and although the levels themselves twist around each other with shortcuts to unlock within them, there are no branching paths. If you love Souls games for their precise, punishing combat and brutally difficult boss fights that require perfect execution to break through, then P is probably for you.

Since Lords of the Fallen is another souls-like game , it easily gets compared to other souls-like titles like Elden Ring and another newer experience in the genre— Lies of P. Fans of these types of games have a lot to say in terms of which game they found to be more enjoyable or simply play better. While it may be up to personal preference to decide which is better, we can still look at similarities, differences, and overall gameplay to help us place one on top. Lords of the Fallen can very easily be picked out as a souls-like game because it is very much stuck close to the Dark Souls formula. It is a dark fantasy game set in a medieval-style world and features we can quickly relate to the classic Dark Souls, more easily than you might be able to do with Lies of P. However, the game introduces some truly unique features as well that make it stand out more, such as entering two different realms Axiom and Umbral by using your lantern.

Give me your thoughts! Neither one really. Ultimately, both games provide accessibility options to help ease newcomers into the genre, but Lords of the Fallen 's combat is much less exacting than that of Lies of P. I wouldn't compare them in any meaningful way, personally. And then Alan Wake II I'm still going to buy it, but i'm waiting for a sale in the future. I find the level design not fun at all.
