For Ohioans who own man's best friend, add dog licenses to the list of activities that accompany a new year. State law requires residents to renew dog licenses through their county agencies before Jan. Auditor Michael Smith said residents also have a pricing option that supports a local nonprofit agency: the Licking County Humane Society. Smith said he introduced the program, which is in its third year, to help the society after county commissioners contracted it to act as the humane agent for the county. Lori Carlson, executive director of the Licking County Humane Society, said the program helps cover the costs for some of the animals taken in through the humane-agent program.
