I am repairing some doors and door frames and using a scraper to take off layers of gloss and water based paint that has been used over damaged surfaces. I am now concerned because I am revealing black paint underneath which I worry could be lead based. Does anyone know whether this is likely to be lead?

Some of the yellow paint, which i suspect is water based because it's very thin, came away underneath so in some spots, it's back to plaster. Having had a good old Google, I can't determine whether lead was used in wall paint in this era.

I started using chemical stripper and a scraper, but it was so ineffective that the job would have taken weeks. My concerns are - when the builder comes in to remove is it going to create a storm of toxic lead dust everywhere albeit we will ensure dust sheets etc and how long is that an issue for? Also, is there a safe way to remove the wallpaper if the paint underneath is lead? We've managed to get a couple bits up smaller patches pictured, larger patches came off more easily downstairs , but as I was falling asleep last night I had the horrid thought it could be lead paint under the paper. Jord86 likes this. We bought a wallpaper steamer but it was broken, so we were just using elbow grease and metal strippers. Anxiety is awful! It usually works fine on old lead paint but as you have ordered the kit lets wait and see. Lead primer was common which has outlasted modern paints by decades but has not been sold for many years.

We have arranged a builder to come round in a couple of weeks to replace all doorframes and architraves upstairs and getting a quote for upvc window for the downstairs one trace here was inbetween old window and current frame which will rip out all the woodwork there too.
