The story of Otto Anderson, a grumpy widower who is very set in his ways. When a lively young family moves in next door, he meets his match in quick-witted and very pregnant Marisol, leading to an unlikely friendship that will turn his world upside-down. Celia D.

The plot follows a bitter old man who reluctantly gets involved in the lives of his neighbours. Otto Anderson is a year-old widower, living in a rowhouse in suburban Pittsburgh. Six months after losing his wife Sonya, a schoolteacher, Otto has become a cynical, fastidious curmudgeon. Pushed into retirement from his job at a steel plant, he cancels his utilities and plans to kill himself to join his late wife. Preparing to hang himself, Otto is interrupted by the arrival of new neighbors: pregnant Marisol, her husband Tommy, and their daughters Abby and Luna, who try to befriend him. When he attempts suicide, the noose collapses from the ceiling, so he visits Sonya's grave, and has flashbacks to their past: as a young man, he was rejected from the army due to his hypertrophic cardiomyopathy , and met Sonya on a train, where she lent him a silver quarter he has kept ever since.

Otto Anderson, un vieux grincheux, n'a plus de but dans sa vie depuis que sa femme est morte. Although A Man Called Otto never fully rises above its obvious plot machinations, director Forster thankfully applies a fairly restrained, subtle approach. The result is a film to which you ultimately find yourself succumbing even though you never stop being aware that your heartstrings are being shamelessly pulled. How you react to A Man Called Otto totally depends on whether you can go along with Hanks' performance and, for the second time this year after his over-the-top Colonel Parker marred the otherwise excellent Elvis , I found myself unconvinced by the mighty Tom. A Man Called Otto may be about restoring the Ottos of the world to a new sense of purpose. So why does it feel like for anyone who cares about movies, this is just going to create more of the ill-tempered, fist-shaking, get-off-my-lawn kind?
