Knowles knowles drivers the leading manufacture of balanced armature drivers. These drivers, originally developed for hearing aids and other critical listening applications, offer improved fidelity, realism and detail over traditional dynamic drivers. They are incredibly small and lightweight, and provide greater output with less power, knowles drivers.
Balanced armature drivers. Premium audio in a tiny package. In wired or wireless earphones, balanced armature drivers are small enough to replicate the performance of premium loudspeakers by allowing separate woofers, mid-range drivers, and tweeters to be combined in a single package. As an audio pioneer and global leader in balanced armature receiver design, Knowles collaborates with leading brands globally to deliver exceptional premium audio experiences. What is a balanced armature? Learn how a balanced armature driver works and understand its key components.

With a few rare outliers excepted, there are two different types of earphone drivers: dynamic drivers and balanced armatures. Although great earphones have been made with either type of driver, and often contain both types, the two drivers are very different in form and performance. Most headphone enthusiasts understand the concept of dynamic drivers, which are basically just miniaturized versions of conventional speakers, but many do not understand how balanced armatures work, or what their advantages and disadvantages are. Hugh Knowles invented balanced armatures in to serve the hearing-aid market, and the company he founded, Knowles Electronics, remains the leading supplier. First, a quick primer. A dynamic driver uses a coil of wire or voice coil wound around a cylindrical former attached to a diaphragm, and a magnetic gap that the coil moves through. Run voltage through the coil and the diaphragm moves back and forth, just like a standard tweeter or woofer. A balanced-armature driver works on similar principles, but has a reed that runs through a stationary voice coil, and is attached with a tiny rod to a diaphragm. Run voltage through the coil, the coil magnetizes the reed, and the reed vibrates, which in turn vibrates the diaphragm. Brent Butterworth: What is the advantage of a balanced armature over a dynamic driver? Andrew Bellavia: The main difference is that the coil in a balanced armature is not moving. In a dynamic driver, the coil is part of the moving mass, and in the smaller sizes of those drivers, this imposes a limitation on the number of turns of wire.

Despite their tiny size, balanced armature drivers offer incredibly detailed and accurate sound. Their thin, lightweight diaphragms are highly responsive for unprecedented clarity. Designers of modern hearables must balance sound quality and features with comfort, discreet appearance, and battery life. Manufacturers of hearing aids have wrestled with these issues for decades. It is no coincidence that virtually all of the world's hearing aid companies have chosen balanced armature drivers for their devices. Small enough to fit in the ear tip, balanced armature drivers allow more room in hearables for sensors, additional features, or a larger battery, without sacrificing comfort. Their high efficiency means longer battery life in the coming next generation of hearables as they do for hearing aids today. Maybe possible; is this going to be your day job from now on or are you just going to keep it limited within a hobbyist's capacity with a real job on side? Forums New posts Search forums. Balanced armatures were in regular use in WW2. In this configuration, the balanced armature drivers focus on the critical high-end portion of the audio spectrum, bringing a new level of clarity and realism. Remember Me. Nobody buys a loudspeaker with one driver in it -- even the new base model Amazon Echo announced a few days ago has woofers and tweeters in it. It's without doubt there is massive profits for headphone manufacturers and retailers here. AB: Balanced armatures are fast and responsive, so you get every little aspect of the music. They use different materials for the diaphragm, low pass filter on the BA instead of sound tubes and so on so it comes with a pretty high price but it is possible. I have to revise my previous statement. To me, the dynamic sounds softer, warmer, fuller, but a little less precise.

Hugh Knowles' invention would have been more properly referred to as the subminiature balanced armature receiver. As DSP current demand keeps going down and down, the percentage of current consumed by the driver is higher; when DSP current goes down by half, a balanced armature will then have a two- or three-hour advantage.
