As a South Indian, my first saree was a Kanchivaram which I wore for my class 10th farewell!

I distinctly remember this was my first time I laid eyes on a Kanjeevaram saree, as commonly known to a Mumbaikar, or a Kancheevaram as traditionally called by a south Indian. Until then I had only seen Bollywood diva Rekha, dazzling in gold and metallic thread inlay zari Kanjeevaram silk saree draped about her. So, I had this larger than life, but also a golden goddess image of this saree in my teen brain. Nalli saree shopping experience was instrumental to make me realize it is much more than just gold zari and brocade. In my first ever saree shopping experience, we left the shop with a yellow-gold Kancheevaram for my cousin and blueish grey Mysore Silk for me. Thanks to Kanjeevaram weaving heirloom.
