Juice is based partially upon Rizwan's real life, [3] [4] though Rizwan has stated the show is "definitely fictional", [5] and features his real-life mother and brother as his family in the show. Juice follows Jamma, a young gay man who is navigating commitment issues in his relationship with his boyfriend, Guy, and attention issues in his relationship with his family. Guy contrasts with Jamma's high octane personality; he is a calmer, older man with an established career as a therapist and a desire for his relationship with Jamma to become more concrete. Jamma's mother, Farida, is a former movie star who now manages the Megacentre, a community centre for underprivileged people of all ages. Both Farida and Jamma's younger brother, Isaac, often upstage and outshine him, much to Jamma's dismay. The title of the show was inspired by Rizwan's mother, who used to say "If life gives you mangoes, make mango juice.

From confetti orgasms to the surreal scene he makes his butt-cheeks dance, the rising comedian's debut show is wonderfully weird and wacky. His infectious energy also makes him hard to miss. The actor, comedian and longtime M. That was pretty good advice, right? It worked today. Ordering a quiet cuppa is about to get tougher for Rizwan because his BBC Three sitcom Juice , which he wrote, created and stars in, is absolutely brilliant and certain to boost his profile. But Juice , which Rizwan developed from his Edinburgh Fringe show of the same name, is a glorious star vehicle which showcases his flair for infusing relatable scenarios with surreal clowning: in episode two, his character Jamma tries to impress a group of potential new flatmates by pulling down his trousers and making his butt-cheeks dance. Even if I tried to make it autobiographical, once the actors got in there — including my mum and brother — they made it their own thing. He also banned his collaborators from trying to steer the show closer to existing sitcom hits. R izwan has always been driven and very hands-on.

TV comedy fans will know Rizwan from his, shall we say, unconventional approach on Taskmaster. Now Rizwan gets a chance to put everything he is nuttily good at together in his crazily wonderful debut sitcom Juice which he has written and stars in. Rizwan plays fast-talking, funny-walking Jamma, a chaotic, attention-seeking carefree soul who, in the first episode, thinks he is about to get a promotion in the marketing agency he works for. After all, the firm seems as wacky as him, complete with a ball pond in the open plan workspace. Outside work he has a relationship with Guy, played by Russell Tovey, who is a rather more sensible therapist. Things go suitably pear-shaped when Rizwan has to run a focus group testing out a new product and he gets his brother Isaac in to be one of the group — it's a bit sneaky but it makes up the numbers and also earns his bro a bit of dosh. It turns out, however, that laid back Isaac possesses the looks, charm and social skills that Jamma lacks and without even trying is soon having the success that Jamma has been dreaming of.
When brothers Mawaan and Nabhaan Rizwan were children, it felt as though they only ever had one choice: to become actors. Their mum, Shahnaz, was a child actor in her native Pakistan. Now the brothers are working together on their first TV series: a comedy called Juice. Written and created by Mawaan, the show sees the pair play brothers - while mum Shahnaz is stepping into the role of their mother. We could skip the formalities and get into an open dialogue straight away. In the surreal comedy series Juice, Jamma played by Mawaan is silly and chaotic, forever running away from the responsibilities of his family and his relationship with Guy played by Russell Tovey. Isaac played by Nabhaan - an aspiring artist lacking direction in life - is more serious and grounded. I found him hilarious. From an early age, Mawaan knew he wanted to be creative for a living, and YouTube provided him the perfect place to do that. His YouTube videos like My Mum Hates Me, where Mawaan and Shahnaz talk about the ways they annoy each other, racked up hundreds and thousands of views.

It delves into the mind of a cartoonish millennial named Jamma, played with intentionally excruciating hamminess by Rizwan. Jamma dances and gesticulates through life blithely, often trying to do the right thing but rarely doing anything other than making whatever situation he happens to be in worse. Juice is based on a show Rizwan mounted at the Edinburgh festival fringe in , and, unlike so many other queer comedies, it is not about a quest for acceptance in any traditional sense. In other words, Jamma lives entirely in his own world. When Jamma is experiencing anxiety, everything around him shakes and shudders; his orgasm is met with the blast of a confetti cannon. Shahnaz is a total scene-stealer as a washed-up actor trying to stage a production of War Horse with a group of small children; volatile and manic one moment and tender the next, it often feels as if her character is more finely drawn than Jamma, who generally acts wacky and weird.
