Books have had a huge impact on me. They gave me a reason to push through my early struggles with dyslexia, and it was a book that inspired me to sail around the world. Being given the opportunity to write a book about my voyage taught me a huge amount and gave me an appetite to write more. Perhaps a little audaciously, I also thought that I would be able to do it justice, that my love of sailing would add a nice perspective to the story. Well, I do have an ulterior motive… I want more young girls to fall in love with sailing!

As the fantastical features of this novel became clear, my interest and enjoyment of the story increased. End- Alex finds out that this is all just a myth and Sam and Alex become best friends. When Alex is forced to move to the tiny coastal town of Boreen Point when her father moves oversea, she expects boredom. I was a bit surprised that it then involved merpeople as I hadn't picked up on any fantastical elements from the blurb and even though it was quite an easy, young read, I did enjoy it. This book was a very easy read. The sweet romance is interwoven with the themes of friendship and magic and is handled delicately.
