The journey was immensely enjoyable to walk — many times in the London sections — and fun to write about, although I have taken my time over it. Part one was posted in May ! And finally Leigh-on-Sea and Southend-on Sea. I was keen to take a closer look, indeed southend on sea, which was why I took the train to Dartford in March this year with my friend Dave.
An icy blast of wind battered the end of Southend Pier as I stood, looking out across the Thames Estuary. Somewhere on the other side of the water, the outlines faintly visible in the haze and bright sunshine, were a plethora of industrial buildings including a large tower or chimney who knew which , and the town of Sheerness-on-Sea. Closer by, and easier to view, were the cargo vessels and ships heading to various ports dotted around the south east, and perhaps around the world. Some may even have been making their way towards London, perhaps to deliver rice or sugar to the factories that line the riverside at the eastern edges of the capital. I strained my eyes in a vain attempt to make it all more visible, and then gave up as a particularly strong gust of wind bashed me squarely in the face. Weather conditions were not in my favour? Where have I heard that before?

A fitting end to a trip that greatly exceeded our expectations. She lived on a featureless housing estate with very few amenities, but I managed to amuse myself.

It was built in the 14 th century as a chantry chapel, where people prayed for the souls of the dead. It looked like there had been a lot of recent development. On the opposite side is Purfleet and then Thurrock. Only takes 45 minutes. Canvey Island is in Essex, a few miles west of Leigh-on-Sea. The nearest station is Benfleet; trains run from Liverpool Street. Clearly visible at low tide of course. Quite a few looked disused. It would be neat to have a booklet made of it. Except when there are high winds and the bridge is closed, the bridge is used for southbound traffic and the tunnels for northbound. I was thinking of the distance that all the barges had to go up the Thames before they got to the docks.

The town of Canvey Island on the northern shore usually marks the point on the northern bank, with a line going through the water to the south bank, where mankind has somehow managed not to build an equivalent, matching town.
