The present book includes eight studies exploring themes and motives from ancient literature visualised in Poland, mostly in Warsaw, between the end of the 15th and the end of the 19th centuries. Some of them were executed by Polish artists, the others by foreigners who were court artists to kings of Poland or who worked in Gdañsk, the semi-independent city-republic of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The first chapter investigates the oldest Polish depictions of Hercules at the crossroads and the Judgment of Paris, both executed in the second half of the 15th century. Chapters 5, 6 and 7 investigate art objects which are the fruits of mature classicism.
