Iliza Shlesinger can laugh about it now. But the true-life relationship that inspired her new Netflix movie Good On Paper is still appalling to anyone who hears it for the first time. In the movie, debuting Wednesday, Shlesinger plays a trusting, successful woman who is deceived and manipulated into romance by a man played by Ryan Hansen who builds himself up on a tower of increasingly elaborate lies. By the time she figures out he's not at all who he says he is, he's already woven himself into every part of her life. If it weren't as ridiculous as it is infuriating, it would play like a horror story; as it is, Shlesinger calls the film a "rom- con " rather than a rom-com. Shlesinger also wrote the movie, basing it on someone she dated several years ago. He lied about his job, where he went to college, where he lived, and played on her sympathy with tales of illness and personal hardship that all turned out to be bogus.

How did you get into comedy? I was always into watching funny shows — what was on TV that I could sneakily watch after my mom went to bed. I would write and film my own sketches and I joined a sketch troupe in college. From there I got the crazy idea that I could just speak, sans ensemble, alone on a stage. So I started doing standup. The rest is a blurry history. I was probably around When we got there it was a room full of 50 to year-old men, having a party where they had also hired strippers who were dancing and sitting on laps while we told jokes. Where do you find your material? I get a lot of material from being honest about my own feelings — my fears and embarrassment. Everything we say when we date, are in relationships and relating to each other is based on a need to feel seen, to survive, to feel heard and I love talking about it. Best heckle?
