Once upon a time, a little bookcase became a beloved classic around the world. And, like most things small, it grew. BILLY is a modern bookcase, now more customisable and used in many more ways than just for books. BILLY can be as small and humble or as big and proud as you want it to be. At IKEA we always look for the best way to manufacture our furniture to make it more affordable and sustainable. So we've worked hard to make our iconic BILLY bookstore make more efficient use of its raw materials, but also now it can be easily assembled and disassembled! You do not believe it?

You can imagine the level of my excitement when I moved to London after university and discovered the beast of furniture retail. Safe to say, it was love at first sight — particularly on the budget I was working with back in the late nineties! Flat packed furniture was not something I was familiar with at all. I had literally never seen anything like it. Having always been a DIY lover at heart, I remember the sheer novelty of it all — the excitement of the assembly process and the sense of achievement once it was done. I eventually got rid of it after a house move and major clear out and was sad to see it go. So, when IKEA delivered a new one to my door last week, I was excited to have this little classic back in our home. They sent products from the BILLY range to handful of interior stylists, bloggers and social media influencers, etc. I mean, just take a look at what the lovely Live Louw Girl did. So I left it as is and styled it really simply in my living room, using some books and a few favourite accessories. And whilst I really loved the result, I had a nagging itch to do something a little more spectacular with it — particularly since I planned on leaving it where it is in my living room. I have been after a cane or rattan cabinet for soooo long. This could be it. That thought was immediately followed by an epic search for a small quantity of cane webbing — and on the second day of scouring what felt like the entire world, I was united with a roll that was in the garage of a dear friend.

Klar, damit kann man an sich nicht viel falsch machen, aber etwas langweilig sind sie schon. Als wir uns dann ein neues Lowboard mit geriffelter Front zugelegt haben wollte ich unbedingt, dass das Billy Regal den gleichen skandinavischen Look bekommt. Allerdings sind die Lamellen dann horizontal und das sieht dann eher nach Umkleidekabine aus.
