To stay at home and avoid the world is one response; we chose to go out and confront and learn, fully aware of risks and not behaving foolishly on the one hand, and on the other hand refusing to let terrorists win by keeping us cowered in our homes. In the past we had both happily made excursions to the Egyptian Market, aka the Spice Market, in the Eminonu district on the waterfront below Sultanahmet, but this time we were disappointed.
