Him and her sitcom
Series 1 starts with Steve and Becky doing their usual thing - staying in bed and just about to have sex. It ends pretty much the same way too, but in between there's arguments, a fancy dress party, awkward conversations with parents and a football match to watch. In the second series Becky and Steve's relations blossoms above the nitty gritty of living together, him and her sitcom, but there's trouble on the horizon. It starts with Becky moving into Steve's flat to live with him full time.
Russell Tovey plays Steve, a laddish man with no desire to seek employment in Stefan Golaszweski 's comedy about what really goes on behind the bedroom doors of today's somethings. Surviving on benefits, Steve has no dreams and no goals He has no interest in any issues beyond eating, sleeping, drinking and having sex. Sarah Solemani plays Becky, a ladette with no desire to seek employment. Popular, true to her friends and always first to hit the dance floor when clubbing with the girls, Becky is sarcastic sometimes to the point of meanness.
Him and her sitcom
Call it the ongoing drip-down effect of The Royle Family if you like — although it's more likely a knock-on effect of budget restrictions — but lately, the BBC has been crawling with low-key single-set sitcoms. Simon Amstell's Grandma's House let its surreal, borderline-fictional personality crisis play out in a single house. Rev did manage to venture outside, but didn't exactly scream "big budget action adventure". The show's premise is simple: a young unemployed couple living in a bedsit and trying to avoid engaging with the outside world. It's so simple that it took a while to get going — but three weeks in and it's been picking up the following that it deserves. Close-up and intimate it may be, but this isn't one of those sitcoms where nothing happens. Its writer, Stefan Golaszewski, nails that twentysomething apathy in which real-world events are dangerous invasions into time available for watching Inspector Morse DVDs and having sex. In fact, Golaszewski breaks the last great TV taboo about young people, in showing them to be almost boring. People drift in and out of the bedsit with little explanation of who they actually are. This is real life in all its dull randomness. Normally my heart sinks when something is described as "getting darker" — as if dark implies better, or funnier, or worthwhile. Last week, Steve and Becky avoided going out to a party to celebrate a young boy's remission from leukaemia because there wasn't a free bar. They decided to stay in and have sex again instead.

Him and her sitcom
This fourth and final series has been set in a hotel, where we've witnessed the grand spectacle of mutually enabled delusion, pettiness and empty materialism that was the nuptials of Becky's vile sister Laura. Laura was in a drunken rage last night, having discovered her new husband's affair with another man during the ceremony no one could be more richly deserving of such a fate. Between attempts to seduce Steve and anyone else that she could lure into the disabled loo,. Laura did find time to reassure Becky Sarah Solemani that she'd keep her pregnancy a secret — in inimitable style: "I've been planning this day since I was three so I don't really care what you and your ugly little lesbian embryo are doing. Between them, Howard and writer Stefan Golaszewski have created a character who is simultaneously detestable beyond all imagining and utterly recognisable.
