But for me, both games just had too much. The expansion takes place in a flooded and overgrown Los Angeles, which is now known as the Burning Shores thanks to the lava also flowing through the area. Tall buildings are partially submerged in water, and the Hollywood sign looms in the distance with a giant machine tangled around it. Guerrilla teamed Aloy up with a buddy during much of Forbidden West , but Seyka quickly became my favorite of her companions. And over time, Seyka actually gets Aloy, who is usually quite stoic under the weight of her world-saving responsibilities, to show some vulnerability.

This expansion brings Aloy to the Burning Shores , a volcanic archipelago formed from the ruins of Los Angeles accessible after completing the main story. Knowing that Londra is too far dangerous to be left alive, Aloy departs via Sunwing to the archipelago. The announcement trailer for the Burning Shores DLC, released in December , briefly shows Aloy on the back of a Sunwing, in which she appears not to be wearing the default Nora Anointed armor, but rather an armor that bears heavy resemblance to that of the Quen tribe. The entire location appears to have become a "treacherous volcanic archipelago", as described by Guerilla. Landmarks shown in the trailer include the Capitol Records building, the Griffith Observatory and of course the Hollywood sign. Unlike the Isle of Spires in the north, which was formed through rising sea levels, the Burning Shores were formed by catastrophic geological activity which fractured the land into an island chain. The region is among the most remote in the known world, and no tribe lays claim to it. It is perhaps for this reason that the Burning Shores appear to be considered separate from the Forbidden West , despite lying west of the Sundom. Beginning around the year , the area was ripped apart by tectonic activity over a period of almost six decades, transforming it to a treacherous, volcanic archipelago. Following the reintroduction of humanity, the region, dubbed the "Burning Shores" by the nearby Tenakth , remained uninhabited due to its unforgiving landscape and vast separation from the inhabited tribal territories. Shortly before the outbreak of Regalla 's rebellion, a Tenakth scouting mission was sent to the region to determine its suitability for habitation: the region was quickly deemed unsuitable, as the resources and might necessary to fortify the region against machines would be unrealistic. The effects of a collapsing biosphere were felt strongly by the distant Quen tribe, who were forced to endure crop failure, severe flooding, and drought. Because of this, the Quen Emperor ordered the launch of an expedition to the ruins of San Francisco in an effort to locate data to save the tribe. After nearly seven years of preparations, the Eastern Expedition was launched and a large fleet was set out across the Pacific Ocean. The returning Ashly Burch is as good as ever as Aloy, but special mention has to go out to Kylie Liya Page as Seyka, who does a fantastic job at creating an engaging and believable three-dimensional character in a relatively short amount of time.
