At the outset, Ann Lucy Walters is conspicuously alone, living in a well-camouflaged campsite in an upstate New York forest. But flashbacks soon show her an unknown amount of time earlier, fleeing her home with husband Jason Shane West and their infant daughter as gunshots fire in the distance and the radio reports a deadly, widespread viral infection. Having grown up in these woods, where Jason trained her in wilderness survival basics, the family apparently had enough warning about the crisis to prepare as well as could be managed, with camping supplies, some long-shelf-life food and a gun packed into the car that now sits idle next to her tent. But I had a feeling that like so many independent films trying to be cool and 'arty', they were going to wrap it up with some sort of twist at the end. A highly infectious pandemic has turned most of the population into mindless, violent plague bearers. We see Ann Lucy Walters being self sufficient living alone in the woods, setting box traps using cheese-whiz as bait. The film does attempt to deliver a few interesting survival skills, many of which would get you killed in reality. The actors who bring these characters to life are strong, mostly because they seem like real people, not actors trying to "be" real people. Eventually, she meets two other survivors who fill up some of her loneliness, but inevitably with human beings and all of their quirks and hidden emotional turmoil, events shift rapidly. Knowing how it ends — they get them! This movie was a horrible snoozefest.
