The lens was produced in the old Soviet Union by Jupiter among others from till and is one of most mass produced lenses in the world! I bought the M42 screwmount version hence the 44m name , since I have that adapter, but they made it available in many other mounts. The reason for buying this lens was one thing, and one thing only: The swirley bokeh effect! What really surprised me though, was all the other scenarios this lens was good for! And it does amazing with black and white photography. The lens is built like a tank! My copy is very smooth in the focus ring, and the aperture ring has nice clicks.

If you have reservations about a manual focus portrait lens, you're not alone. I've fallen in love with my manual focus Rokinon 12mm wide angle , but a fast telephoto lens is a whole different ballgame. The build construction is substantial: solid metal and steel. Note that the adapter you use will likely feel cheap and plastic-y in comparison to the Helios ! The aperture ring holds firmly in place, and the focus ring is nice and smooth. Manual focus is

KMZ the same factory that made the Zenit cameras started manufacturing this lens from The Helios 44 lenses have built a cult around themselves in modern days and have been very popular for portrait photography and videography, it is the number one vintage lens used for making videos on modern cameras. It is very popular for its image character, its clickless aperture, balanced center sharpness and not least its swirly bokeh. As far as I know there are two versions of the early silver metal body; an original very early version with a bayonet mount and Later versions are all black and have the namings the most spread version , , 44M, 44M-4, 44M-5, 44M-6 and the final 44M Only the two early Helios 44s have 13 aperture blades, the later ones have either 8 or 6 blades. Very sharp across the board, at least on aps-c, unique bokeh. It's especially noticeable in backlit or overexposed compositions: note the glow around her nose, forearm, and coffee cup. That lens has the most amazing swirly bokeh. It was very intersting to read this note. PS: We don't spam! Do you know how many aperture blades your particular Helios has? None the less I decided to use the 44m on my nikon D, since I only have my kit lens.
