The Harvard Film Archive is a cinematheque and a film archive dedicated to the preservation and harvard film archive exhibition of film. Recordings include pre-screening introductions by curator Haden Guest and programmer David Pendleton and personal introductions by filmmakers as well as post-screening question and answer sessions between curators, programming staff, audience, and filmmakers. Recordings in the collection reflect the diversity of content in the HFA's regular screening series, which offers a public cinematheque program, presenting films Friday through Monday nights. All screenings are held in the Archive's seat theater located in the historic Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts. The HFA frequently invites filmmakers to discuss their work and engage with the vibrant community of students, professors, artists and cinephiles who regularly attend HFA screenings. Recordings are arranged alphabetically by last name of the speaker, or in some cases the subject of the recorded discussion, within each year.

Film programmer Amos Vogel 's extensive Cinema 16 film collection, originally sold to Barney Rosset and Grove Press circa —, served as the founding collection for the Harvard Film Archive. The archive's first curator was Vlada K. Petric , who expanded the collection and established the year-round regular screenings. He retired in and in Bruce Jenkins assumed the post. Kirby announced that the archive would be absorbed by the Harvard College Library and managed by the Library of Fine Arts. This caused some concern within the Harvard community about the future of the archive and its programming.

It maintains an extensive archive of over 40, motion picture prints, audiovisual elements and ephemera from around the world and from almost every period in film history. Located in the historic Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts on the Harvard University campus, the HFA cinematheque is renowned for its diverse programming of films which—due to age, rarity, challenging content or format—are not screened regularly or often even available for viewing at all.
