The Harvard Classics , originally marketed as Dr. Eliot's Five-Foot Shelf of Books , is a volume series of classic works of world literature, important speeches, and historical documents compiled and edited by Harvard University President Charles W. Buyers of these sets were apparently attracted to Eliot's claims. The General Index contains upwards of 76, subject references. This program emphasizes a wide range of knowledge and skills within its seven doctoral tracks: ancient history, Byzantine Greek, classical archaeology, classical philology, classical philosophy, Medieval Latin, and modern Greek. Under the guidance of our renowned faculty, you will take an innovative approach to the study of the ancient Greek and Roman worlds from a variety of fields and methodological perspectives. Applicants are expected to have competence in both Greek and Latin, with sufficient preparation to take courses numbered above in one of these languages upon beginning the program.
