Happyself journal
Finding the right journal can be hard.
Setting the standards for self-care, creator of emotionally educative journal, HappySelf, Francesca Geens encourages kids to ditch digital and return to pen and paper. We caught up with Geens to talk self-care, social media and the importance of screen-free time. I was fed up of reading daily reports in the press about how our kids are growing up stressed and I really wanted to do something to help children develop healthy habits as they grow up in this increasingly busy and switched on world. In my productivity consultancy, I have seen a return to pen and paper, a rise in journaling and witnessed the benefits of this myself and adults striving to improve their digital resilience, tackle distraction and improve their daily routines with journaling, mindfulness and science backed techniques, proven to increase happiness. For me, it means taking time out for myself to recharge, rest and enjoy activities away from work. Part of it comes from a daily routine which involves getting up before the rest of the family to meditate, journal and read. The rest gets scheduled into my working day, by blocking out time to watch the kids play matches or making time for exercise.

As a psychologist and a mother, I highly recommend The HappySelf range of journals. They are a nourishing resource based on research into the building blocks to wellbeing and expertly guide children through their emotions and the challenges that naturally arise in their day. The HappySelf Journal is an excellent tool to help introduce children to these essential life skills. I strongly believe that, if we could support children in developing their emotional intelligence using tools like the HappySelf Journal, we would see a reversal in the trend of increasing hospital presentations and equip our children with essential skills for their future. Every child should have this book. It has had such a positive impact on my 8 year old in just 5 days. Even her 15 year old brother has commented on the change! As a teacher for 10 years, I have seen so many children struggle with self belief and give up when faced with difficult problems. I taught Zippy Friends which helped with emotional health and P4C Philosophy for Children which also helped them look at things differently. I can honestly say, this lovely little book is brilliant. These journals are the perfect resource to help your child develop their emotional awareness and develop the tools and habits that will continue to support their mental and emotional wellbeing. These are also perfect if your little one struggles to talk about their feelings as the questions and prompts encourage children to share their emotions in a safe way.

All opinions are my own. I think we can all agree that the past year has been challenging. The world has completely changed and it can be hard to get your head around, even as an adult. So anyway, all of that was making me think it might be a good idea to get her a Junior HappySelf Journal, even if it was a bit advanced. She, again like most children her age, has very strong emotions and seems to have trouble expressing them in any way other than screaming or biting.
The HappySelf Journal is a daily journal for children aged 6 to 12, based on scientifically proven methods that promote happiness, develop healthy habits for life and nurture enquiring minds. Beautifully illustrated and easy to use, with just a few minutes focus each day, children benefit by being encouraged to express gratitude, reflect on their emotions and think about their actions. My 6 nearly 7 year old son has been writing his journal for the past two months. This is the boy who was born independent, who is very loving but not remotely tactile and who declares his love on paper, not in person. I honestly believe the journal is connecting us and heightening his awareness of his feelings. Thank you.

Following on from the success of our Junior edition this journal brings you the same goodness but for an older audience. Perfect for both young and older teens as well as adults! Spend just a few minutes a day with our beautifully designed pages to express gratitude, reflect on the emotions of the day and think about your actions. We have deliberately left things flexible so you can make the journal your own, with plenty of space for a shared writing, drawing and colouring experience. The recommended age range is 6 to The journal pages have been designed to have little writing and there is plenty of space for different handwriting styles or drawing. The paper quality can cope with a range of pencils and pens. We highly recommend you fill out the journal with your child, even acting as scribe if your child is tired or dislikes writing, so that the emphasis can be on the conversation and reflection rather than the act of writing. Available in yellow and limited edition colours.
