Do you visit fabric shops while you travel? Do you ever make a shop a key destination for your travel itinerary? The building has grown significantly from my first visit, and the excitement grows each year! All information in this post is based on my personal shopping experiences and a brief behind the scenes tour. Plan to spend at least an hour in the store- that time will fly by! The store is open Tuesday-Friday and Saturday central time , so plan your shopping time accordingly. Do you have a specific project in mind?

This has been on my bucket list since the turn of the century when I was first introduced to their catalog by my quilting friend Trish. Today was THE day! Row after row of fabric, all grouped by manufacturer, for what seemed like miles, quilters with their shopping buggies piled high with colorful bolts. I noticed that the quilts had labels with identifying locations of the corresponding kits. My biggest thrill was seeing the quilt hanging and having my photo made with Deb. This island gal found the perfect print to perhaps be the curtains in my future reconstructed studio or a future quilt. It was just calling my name. And tomorrow I get to truly experience Paducah! Years ago, I walked into a fabric store in Hawaii. The woman there asked me where I was from, and I said Paducah, Kentucky. Although many people miss the Hancock store that was in their hometown, Hancock's of Paducah is not part of the chain and has no current plans to open a second location. Previously, the space was occupied by a Kroger Grocery store, and would later be a Dollar General for many years. The store carried high-end fashion fabrics, and Mrs. Waggoner would spend hours helping brides pick out the fabric, patterns, and trims for their wedding dresses and bridesmaid dresses. Ten years later, a second 30, sq ft addition was added to provide room for the rapidly growing business. At 60, square feet, the store is larger than a standard American football field!

When I would visit with my Mom, we would order the batting inside the store and then head out to semi trailers in the parking lot to pick up the batting we purchased. The good news is that with one exception two carts can pass each other in all of the shop aisles. This is less than five miles from downtown where the National Quilt Museum and the Convention Center are located, about a 10 minute drive.
