A good little tip: When using xliveless to do this, i did the following to keep using the save game AND to have access to online multiplayer. Do all those steps from the OP, then after loading the game, save it again in a different slot. Then restart GTA, and load from the slot you just saved to. The one in the sticky FAQ worked for me.
