Fu-who, Fu-what??? One of the many reasons why anime is so unbelievably awesome is the fact that there is a wide variety of different characters who are passionate about and enjoy different things. That being said, it goes without saying that the above extends towards not-so-mainstream interests that have other characters look at them funny. It is this aspect of the fujoshi archetype in anime which opens up the floor for their often insane and perverted antics; however, it is important to note that it is very possible to have one without the other. These characters are fully capable of enjoying BL without attempting to re-enact it using the people around them.

Fudanshis

Cleaning and analyzing the data from the BL Fan Interview Project has shown predictable results in some ways and surprising results in others. This is the first chart I wanted to share. Three of the data points are self-explanatory— which participants use Fujin, Fudanshi, or Fujoshi. For the other two options, I felt I should elaborate on why they were organized in this way. Their recorded answers did not indicate if there had been a change or not in that decision to not use the fujin terms for themselves. It indicated a very clear decision to no longer use these terms to describe themselves. With the recent activity and trends in the online BL fan space, I have observed that many fans or readers may have used these terms at one time but were influenced or pressured to stop using them recently in the last years. What I have found to be a large influence over this decision is a negative response to these words online.
