And even your more niche gamers who would be paying attention to the release schedule of a publisher like XSeed were focused on things like Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey, or Infinite Space, or… OK well maybe I do mean the wrong time of year, too. It is a game trying to share a feeling more than it is anything else. There is some action, sure, and a little exploration to be done, but it is mostly about that one feeling, and how all consuming it can be. Fragile Dreams is a game about loneliness, and trying to confront that loneliness, and those feelings permeate almost every facet of it. Fragile Dreams certainly has its issues, having to do with tedium or just some strange lack of quality of life decisions that were hard to ignore in and are even more difficult to ignore now. But what it does well — crafting a sense of loneliness that reflects the game world and the state of mind of the protagonist, Seto — worked in , and probably works even better now, considering the trajectory of the reality we live in. I love this insulting, infuriating waste of time. I will never, ever play Fragile Dreams again. However, I am intensely glad that I have played it once. Why is it that I'm so alone? This is dedicated to those that share the same feeling of isolation. The game tells the story of a young boy named Seto, possibly the Sole Survivor of a world where humanity has suddenly vanished, leaving its cities abandoned. After the old man who he had been staying with passes on, Seto is left completely alone, but upon reading a letter the old man has written for him, he decides to leave the safety of his home and venture to " the red tower to the east " in hopes of finding other survivors. During his journey, Seto meets an assortment of strange and eclectic characters: a capricious silver-haired girl called Ren ; a motherly AI called a "Personal Frame" PF ; a roguish boy named Crow; an enigmatic ghost called Sai; a quiet spirit named Chiyo; the chicken-headed Item Merchant ; and a bespectacled scientist called Shin.

Fragile Dreams: Farewell Ruins of the Moon has plenty going for it, after all — and not just a page-occupyingly long name. At one end you have the post-apocalyptic setting, where the lonely Seto, grieving after the death of his grandfather, sets off through derelict wastelands and dilapidated buildings in search of survivors. The world itself somehow manages to hold within it a sense of loss and mystery that few games can hold a candle to.
