The use of fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography FDG PET scan technology in the management of head and neck cancers continues to increase. The various parameters described to quantify FDG uptake in cancers including standardized uptake value, metabolic tumor volume and total lesion glycolysis are presented. PET scans have found a significant role in the diagnosis and staging of head and neck cancers. They are also being increasingly used in radiation therapy treatment planning. Many groups have also used PET derived values to serve as prognostic indicators of outcomes including loco-regional control and overall survival. FDG PET scans are also proving very useful in assessing the efficacy of treatment and management and follow-up of head and neck cancer patients. This review article focuses on the role of FDG-PET computed tomography scans in these areas for squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck.

Forty-seven scans were for the assessment of residual masses 18 had raised markers and 23 scans were for the investigation of raised markers in the presence of normal CT scans. True positive results were based on positive histology or clinical follow-up. The NPV was higher than that of markers. FDG-PET scanning detected viable tumour in residual masses and identified sites of disease in suspected recurrence. Graphite by coolant. Two studies 2032 were conducted by the same research group, and it is not clear if the same patients were included in both studies.

Most of the large vessel vasculitis patients present with nonspecific signs and symptoms, which are difficult to diagnose clinically. Vasculitis is defined as an inflammatory condition of blood vessels which is characterized by infiltration of leukocytes into the vessel wall. According to CHCC International Chapel Hill Consensus Conference on the Nomenclature of Vasculitides large vessel vasculitis is defined as vasculitis affecting large arteries aorta and its major branches more often than other vasculitides. In clinical practice, the diagnosis of large vessel vasculitis is a difficult task, the reason being most of the patients present with nonspecific signs and symptoms.

Rationale and objectives: Although low-dose computed tomography CT is a recommended modality for lung cancer screening in high-risk populations, the role of other modalities, such as [ 18 F]fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography PET , is unclear. We conducted a systematic review to describe the role of PET in lung cancer screening. Materials and methods: A systematic review was conducted by reviewing primary studies focusing on PET screening for lung cancer until July The analysis was restricted to English and included studies published since A descriptive analysis was used to summarize the results, and the pooled diagnostic performance of selective PET screening was calculated by weighted average using individual sample sizes.

Fluorodeoxyglucose labeled with [ 18 F] FDG is a chemical analog of glucose, where a hydrogen atom of a glucose molecule is replaced with a positron emitter [ 18 F]. Like glucose, FDG is metabolized by hexokinase during glycolysis in the cytosol of the cell; however, unlike glucosephosphate, FDGphosphate is not metabolized further but accumulates intracellularly thus allowing visualization and measurement of local metabolic activity. Relatively long-life of FDG as [ 18 F] compound min and ability to achieve reliable quantitative estimates of cerebral metabolic rate of glucose and distinguish local changes in FDG uptake with visual inspection and semi-quantitative measures make FDG the most commonly used tracer in PET research and clinical neuroimaging. Besides demonstrating high-quality images of the baseline state of brain activity, FDG also provides accurate measures of the magnitude of changes in brain metabolism in response to various physiological stimulations, pharmacological interventions, and functional tests. The patient needs to be fasting for 4 to 6 hours before administration. Standardized uptake value of 2-[18F] fluorodeoxy-D-glucose in predicting outcome in head and neck carcinomas treated by radiotherapy with or without chemotherapy. Squamous cell histology indicates that the primary site is likely in the head and neck while adenocarcinomas mainly arise below the clavicle e. This article is an open-access article which was selected by an in-house editor and fully peer-reviewed by external reviewers. Bedside glucose meter. We did not experience significant fusion mismatch as the ceCT was performed immediately after the PET emission scan, while the patient was maintaining the same position. Physics in Nuclear Medicine 4th ed. J Nucl Cardiol ; 22 : — 3. Time-of-flight TOF PET : For modern systems with a higher time resolution roughly 3 nanoseconds a technique called "time-of-flight" is used to improve the overall performance. Eur Heart J ; 36 : — A second CT simulation and replanning are required in order to ensure the tumor is being dosed appropriately. The PLUS PET in Lung Cancer Staging multicenter trial 48 randomly assigned patients with suspected lung cancer to either PET followed by further standard diagnostic and therapeutic procedures or standard diagnostic and therapeutic procedures alone.

Tomographic Imaging in Nuclear Medicine. One of the disadvantages of a PET scanner is its high initial cost and ongoing operating costs. PET correctly detected 57 of 63 malignant nodules that were solid on CT but was positive for only one out of 10 malignant nodules with a faint or ground-glass appearance on CT. The optimal timing of obtaining the scan has been debated in literature and based on many reports it has been determined that the wk time point after completion of therapy may be the most appropriate[ 31 , 61 , 62 ]. Thus, the specific processes that can be probed with PET are virtually limitless, and radiotracers for new target molecules and processes are continuing to be synthesized. It accumulates inside the cell and must get dephosphorylated by glucosephosphatase for it to leave the cell. Infections may also coexist with vasculitis. Background Since the early s, functional imaging with positron emission tomography PET has been the fastest growing diagnostic modality in oncology [ 1 , 2 ]. Lucas Zoboli Pocebon. FDG is a radioactive tracer. Clinicians should ensure that glucose is under control through laboratory testing, medical therapy, and for at least two days before the injection of FDG. It is produced using a cyclotron and has a half-life of min allowing it to be transported for use in PET scanner facilities. SUV: standard uptake or silly useless value?
