Florans are a playable race in Starbound.
The Florans are a playable race in Starbound. One would expect a race of sentient humanoid plants to be peaceful, nature-loving environmentalists — that presumption is what allows this hyper-aggressive tribal civilization to thrive. Unwitting explorers are prey of choice to the carnivorous Florans, who frequently salvage or reverse engineer the technology they bring to enable their colonization of the stars. Introducing space travel to the primitive Florans had the undesired effect of Floran colonies spanning across star systems, each with their own customs and levels of aggression. Despite this, individual Florans have been known to split apart from their society to lead their own lives in isolation or in the solace of other races, at the cost of being cut off from the collective and considered enemies of all flora for good. Though a unisex race, Floran culture values survival through reproduction and expansion over environmentalism or any perceived bond to Mother Nature. Their aggressive nature appears to be borne from a lack of a concept of non-plant life as opposed to outright contempt.

Plant-based humanoids, they are extremely violent carnivores with no central government or power structure, split into numerous tribes spread across the universe, each led by a Greenfinger. Their speech is often simplistic, and they tend to hisss their sibilantsss. Their primary drives are hunting, acquiring trophies, fighting, eating meat, and more hunting. It is speculated that their general casual view towards killing and consuming other intelligent species stems from not viewing "meat" as "alive" in the same sense they are. A relatively young race, they have primitive technology but are incredibly adept at scavenging and—thanks to the Greenfingers' unique gifts—reverse-engineering other races' tech, much to the universe's chagrin. They have an ugly history with the Hylotl , as the Floran drove the Hylotl under the oceans during a major period of expansion akin to an invasion. While open hostilities have ceased and things have been peaceful for generations, the Hylotl have not forgotten this event and some still harbor disdain towards the Floran. For the Floran's part however they have largely moved on. As with the other player races, Floran characters are given a set of uniquely-styled Armor , their own Ship type with included Pet , and two unique Mech bodies. The Floran equipment generally has a more primitive, cobbled-together look than the other races' gear, though their stats are the same for all other race's equipment at the same Tier.

Find Clues to Locate the Floran Artifact is a quest which Esther gives after the Visit The Outpost has been completed, which introduces inspection mode of the matter manipulator. For this quest players need to scan a number of Floran themed objects which can be found in dungeons or villages. Floran settlements are most likely to be found on forest planets. Only specific objects provide progress points toward quest completion when scanned. To complete the quest players must earn 50 inspection points. There are a number of key objects, which award 20 points each, these will trigger a radio message from Esther. Each Floran settlement or village should have at least one key object placed somewhere within it, as well as several more minor objects worth a smaller number of points.
