I read a comment from a developer in another thread which I can't find now of course that they didn't want fish to re-spawn because they felt it would discourage exploration Personally I think that is silly, since bases are more likely to discourage exploration than anything However, keeping with that idea why not let them breed? The idea is that fish don't just 'respawn' but there has to be two of them of the same species in fairly close proximity to spawn fry. It would not only be more realistic, it would be too slow to be usable as a constant food source, and allow you to, over time, rebuild 'dead zones' with little effort for the player if you over fish you would have to transplant new parents. As an added mechanic you could have it so that certain areas are only hospitable to certain fish likely the fish that spawn there initially. So you can't transplant a spade fish to the starting zone because, reasons make one up, maybe the water is too warm or cold or acidic, trust me fish are very sensitive to water conditions. I think the possibility of overfishing an area is an interesting one but shouldn't be permanent and this would certainly fix that problem. The lifeless zones are a major hit to the beauty of this game and I see it as a major problem. One person cannot overfish. They are not explainable. Keep in mind that the biome would have had to be self-sustaining before the arrival of the player. Also, keep in mind that in freedom mode that has no hunger that fish still disappear. That's why the developer needs to add more dynamic gameplay to make the game more difficult, not contrived mechanics. As I said before, weather effects is one such example that could be done.
I found I didn't explore for fun, I explored out of desperation and it took the fun out of it.

The Cuddlefish is a friendly species of fauna that can only be obtained by hatching one of 5 Cuddlefish Eggs hidden in various locations. It takes about 20 real-life minutes to hatch. The Cuddlefish's body is small, grey in color on the dorsal side, with white bioluminescent coloring on the ventral side, and a white stripe running along the length of its body from the top of its head to its rear-side. It has a slightly bloated belly and possesses no dorsal or caudal fins, sporting only a stubby pair of pectoral fins. Its body also features many small, wart-like lumps. The Cuddlefish's head has two slightly bulging, forward-facing eyes, along with a wide mouth and two small holes that seem to be nostrils.
