This last episode of the Inspector Morse prequel had issues to wrap up — and did it with style. From brilliantly excruciating moments to its intriguing ending, final endeavour, it stayed true to itself.
That was the main emotion felt by Endeavour fans as the credits rolled on the series finale. Not only had this excellent drama gone out on a high, but beloved character DCI Fred Thursday had survived. The whole Thursday lot lasted out the series, with barely a scratch on them. Breathe out. What a relief. In the finale, Thursday disappointed his protegee so deeply that Morse severed all ties with him.

And then when the script arrived, I thought, "Yeah, that's really powerful. That's it. That's exactly what it should be. As we all know, we were in a strange way passing the baton on—even though you're passing it backwards, because it's something that's been already, it's going on—so we knew that this seems the only right place to leave it. The idea of being with Joan completely gone, being disappointed with Thursday, and in a way, perhaps, accepting of his lot, which I know was kind of melancholic place to leave it, but the really right place to leave it.

Series nine, which ended in March, were the final scenes ever shot for the show which was filmed in Oxford. The pilot episode of Endeavour was screened in and attracted 8. In the case of Endeavour, which has just bowed out after 11 years, we knew the police protagonist — Sgt Morse, played by Shaun Evans — must survive. He needs to hand over the role to John Thaw in Inspector Morse, which preceded Endeavour on our screens but follows it in the story of the Thames Valley detective created by Colin Dexter. The writer of all 36 episodes, Russell Lewis, acknowledged that the real challenge of the last Endeavour was to explain why, in the 33 episodes of Morse, he never once mentions Thursday. The logical reason is that the earlier years were written later, but Lewis had to make this psychologically plausible. But that body turned out not to be his, and neither did a second one. A subplot involved death notices in the Oxford Mail, sometimes for people still alive. Screenwriter Lewis included lots of neat quotations from the franchise: the young copper singing in a choir matched a scene in the first Inspector Morse, a shot of the officer in a hospital bed shadowed one in the final Morse.
