Over the past three decades, I have asked hundreds of people to name the five or ten books that have meant the most to them. That may say something about the kind of readers I talk to, but it is an accurate reflection of the broad reach of this half-century-old scientific classic. The book was based on a course the Nobel-prizewinning theoretical physicist and polymath Richard Feynman taught from to , in an attempt to reinvigorate 'freshman physics' at the California Institute of Technology Caltech in Pasadena. With his lectures, Feynman joined a long tradition of famed physicists — such as Max Planck, Arnold Sommerfeld, Wolfgang Pauli and Lev Landau — providing personal grand vistas. Unlike those, Feynman's vista is 'elementary' and joyous — a joy deeply magnified in the audio version. What makes these lectures timeless? Elementary physics has been taught to undergraduates for nearly a century with relatively little change. Over the past 50 years the subject has been even more static. Textbooks and introductory courses have largely targeted those planning to study medicine and engineers with a focus on formulaic problem-solving and exam preparation, rather than cultivating a wonder for nature and the development of physical intuition. Feynman's physics is about simplicity, beauty, unity and analogy, presented with enthusiasm and insight. Superficially, Feynman's primer touches on the same topics that others do: mechanics, thermodynamics, optics, electricity and magnetism, and modern physics.

The Feynman Lectures on Physics is a physics textbook based on a great number of lectures by Richard Feynman , a Nobel laureate who has sometimes been called "The Great Explainer". The book's co-authors are Feynman, Robert B. Leighton , and Matthew Sands. A review in Nature described the book as having "simplicity, beauty, unity The textbook comprises three volumes.

The Feynman Lectures on Physics, original course handouts, The Feynman Lectures on Physics was based on a two-year introductory physics course that Richard Feynman taught at Caltech from to ; it was published in three volumes during the years to , and used as the introductory physics textbook at Caltech for nearly two decades. However, Feynman's original students had no textbook—their only written guidance came from materials that were created "on the fly" by Robert Leighton, Matt Sands, graduate students, and others , mimeographed, and handed out in recitation sections and labs. These materials included lecture summaries and outlines, lab guidelines, descriptions of experiments, homework assignments, exams, and quizzes. Among Feynman's students was Dennis Oberg, who kept his course handouts all these many years, and generously allowed The Feynman Lectures Website to copy them so that we can present them here, with Caltech's permission, as historical documentation of Feynman's original undergraduate physics course. In Matt Sands told me that in about the middle of the 2nd year of the FLP lectures, Feynman started to complain that he was disappointed that he had been unable to be more original.

Gottlieb and Ralph Leighton co-authored Feynman's Tips on Physics , which includes four of Feynman's freshman lectures which had not been included in the main text three on problem solving , one on inertial guidance , a memoir by Matthew Sands about the origins of the Feynman Lectures on Physics , and exercises with answers that were assigned to students by Robert B. Over the past three decades, I have asked hundreds of people to name the five or ten books that have meant the most to them. I, therefore, think that a good theoretical physicist today might find it useful to have a wide range of physical viewpoints and mathematical expressions of the same theory. Although the topics discussed in Feynman's "Red Books" are the same as those discussed in the typical three semester series of introductory Physics, each lesson is presented at a much higher conceptual and philosophical level.
