MI uses mods which are called packages and use a3 format. Using MI you can install those packages into the game. The Mod Installer is an easy tool for selecting mods packages and their installing to the game. It's recommended to backup your saves after every gameplay. By this you can prevent from situations where something causes crash or is bugged.

MI uses mods which are called packages extensions a2, a3, a4, a5. Using MI you can install those packages into the game. Guide and step by step you can find here. If you're modder, please go to Others section and look there for Mod Installer Documentation where is described the package system and ways how to make them. That's why there is an optional download item with those backgrounds created for Mod Installer. This optional item isn't in main MI download item by default.
