Ask most viewers of the hit sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond , and they're likely to point to Ray's father Frank as one of the show's funnier, more colorful characters. His "no holds barred" bluntness, rudeness, and witty sense of humor sets the stage for some funny moments and great zingers in the show. He's something of a paradox, as well. He can be harsh and cold, but also subtly supportive and caring. He exudes a macho, tough-guy image, but has a bit of a soft, sensitive spot too. Though there's a mutual tongue-in-cheek vibe to their banter and insults, it seems clear there's much about Marie that gets to him. He rarely goes out of his way to show love, warmth, or compassion towards her. This makes it all the more strange to see him react so harshly when Marie claims she can see "we have a loveless marriage" in the episode "Marie's Vision. If there's a predominant trait of Ray's father, it's his desire to exude toughness or masculinity. Thus, anything that seems to shatter this image gets him pretty upset.
