Sanrio, the Japanese company that owns the Hello Kitty family of characters, first approached EVA Air in with the concept of selling themed merchandise in flight. After several months of discussion between the two companies, it was decided that the airline would offer not just themed merchandise but an entire Hello Kitty experience to be enjoyed through every aspect of the flight. Since the first Hello Kitty airplane was introduced in , there have been several livery iterations. For , examples of Sanrio-themed liveries include the Shining Star, featuring characters Kiki and Lala along with Hello Kitty, and Celebration Flight, featuring the family of Sanrio characters. More fun liveries are sure to follow as the fleet receives updated paintings over the next several years.
