The museum is housed in a former military fortress - the Baluard de Sant Pere - which dates back to the 16th century, and was part of the Renaissance wall that surrounded the city of Palma. There are also outstanding examples of Catalan and Mediterranean landscapes, and artists who directly or indirectly have been associated with the Balearics: S. Mir, A. Gelabert, H. Anglada-Camarasa, J. The public museum is however managed by a private foundation, chaired by Pedro Serra, who has also personally donated many of the gallery's art pieces. The museum covers a total surface of 5, square metres, with 2, sq. The museum features one of the largest cisterns from the 17th century, known as 'The Aljub'. This fresh water reservoir was used to supply the Sant Pere quarter,as well as ships that used to dock in the harbour. It is now used as a setting for installations of contemporary artists, and for shows and concerts. The exhibition space extends on to large terraces and external spaces, from where you can enjoy wonderful views of the Bay of Palma. There is a book and gift shop, and a highly regarded restaurant on one of the terraces. The gallery itself is excellent. A very nice place to spend an hour. Some good works of Miro and some peripheral Picasso, plus other worthwhile items.
The use of mobile phones is restricted inside the museum. Es Baluard carries out inclusive proposals and projects adapted with and for the different collective, working alongside them.
As well as conserving and publicising its collection, Es Baluard runs a programme of temporary exhibitions, cultural activities and educational and training cycles. The main artists and movements related to the Balearic Islands form a body which took shape after the initial presentation of the collection which was made in the year the museum opened. It is divided into three storeys which are connected to the outside, to the city walls and to each other by means of ramps, skylights and large interior balconies, in an attempt to reflect an indoor street concept. Es Baluard Museu is a Balearic institutional facility set in a privileged location in the Bay of Palma, comprising a cultural complex in and around the historic city wall and adjoining spaces. Aside from its physical location, the project as a concept and mediator extends towards the near radius, based on networking, and towards other geographical and cultural areas with similar projects which it is in tune with and whose synergies can be contemplated. We also record our programming policy associated to the different spaces. The first one referred to the Aljub and subsequently, it was extended to the public tenders, such as the one for the reception of projects linked to the historiography of the Balearic Islands. With the object of uniting and revealing good practice and ethics as a guide, both internally and informatively towards the exterior, we developed a basic manual that synthesizes the channels that mark Es Baluard Museu's conduct and mode of action. Es Baluard Museu d'Art Modern i Contemporani of Palma, located on the edge of the renaissance town wall of Palm, exhibits national and international artists since it opened in The Es Baluard Museum is located on the edge of the bastion of Sant Pere, which forms part of the renaissance wall that enclosed the city of Palma until the early 20th century. The wall also has an old 17th century water reservoir that supplied the " Puig de Sant Pere " neighbourhood. The museum building, inaugurated in , blends in with the lush heritage around it. It is divided into three floors that connect to the outside, the walls and each other by ramps, skylights and large indoor balconies. The museum houses works by the main artists and movements that have been converging on the Illes Balears ever since the early 20th century.

Inaugurated on 30 January by Their Majesties the King and Queen of Spain , Es Baluard Museu currently possesses an important reserve of contemporary art by creators who are either from the Balearic Islands or related to them in some way. As well as exhibiting the works that comprise its collection, Es Baluard Museu holds temporary exhibitions. In , the Acquisitions Committee was set up, a body comprised of experts from within and external to the museum, with the aim of enlarging the collection.
