I come and go on old franchises and old ideas being resurrected by rich old men for rather less rich and old men and women. Sometimes it seems like a roadblock to fresh invention, other times it seems like returning to roads that games were forcibly and unfairly turned away from as forces of marketing and demographic-chasing decided they weren't suitably commercially viable. For example: space sims didn't all but die out because the possibilities were exhausted. Though there have always been survivors, they all but died out because they required huge budgets to pull off well, but could not command the sort of easily advertised-at mainstream audience required to earn their keep. What remained turned inwards, servicing the very particular demands of a passionate few, and making themselves all the more inaccessible to those who were interested but not quite so fervent about it.

I was wondering what would be the best joystick to use for this game. I was wondering which joystick in general would be recommended for beginners and why? The TM is fantastic for a beginner, and works great with ED out of the box; I would say it's pretty much made for it. Easy enough to setup. Lots of buttons and hats, great feedback on the joystick, excellent ergonomics on both the joy and throttle. The value, at least at the price I got it, is unbeatable. My only complaints are that the throttle isn't as butter-smooth as the joystick, and both pieces are super lightweight so it's easy to shift them accidentally. TM also has the advantage of swapping the thumb rest to the opposite side for left handed players or if you want to try dual joysticks. Logitech extreme 3D pro is also good as it is cheap, sturdy and has many buttons. Go go gadget balls! If you want to commit but want to start soft, the Thrustmaster T-Flight HOTAS is a very good starting point, especially if you have medium or small hands. Feels a bit cheaper plastic, but the functionality is there, though it lacks buttons, forcing you to set up your controls for a lot of dual presses. It is very cheap though so an inexpensive commitment.

And it is thrilling.

The comeback, thanks to the removal of almost all middlemen and the ability to engage directly with an audience large enough but spread far and wide, is something I find incredibly exciting. I peer back into the mist of early teenage years stranded in the countryside with a as almost my only companion, and space games were so important to me. Then, around , it stopped, or at least seemed to. Part of that was me, as the earliest stages of an alcohol-orientated social life flickered into being, and part of that was the genre becoming less exciting and more elaborate - though it meant I missed out on some of greats, such as Freespace, I-War and the last worthwhile Lucasarts efforts.

The best joysticks for PC are a great way to get more immersion out of your flight sim games if you can't be bothered with a full Yoke, pedals, and switch panels. In fairness, those sorts of controllers can cost an arm and a leg, be a nightmare to set up, and completely dominate your gaming space once installed. For enthusiasts, these are definitely worth checking out, but if you only play an in-depth flight sim every once in a while, a joystick will do you just fine. We have a great selection of models on this list, three of which are from Thrustmaster, which is one of the top dog manufacturers in this department. Along with joysticks and some of the best PC controllers , they also make some of the best racing wheels for PC money can buy.

HOTAS stands for Hand on Throttle and Stick, the system provides a flight stuck for controlling your aircraft and a throttle for navigating your engine. It gives you an amazingly realistic spaceship experience and is a must-have for every serious gamer.

But I don't know what to aim for, so I ask you who must be playing with your joystick since ancient times : Please, which joystick model would you recommend that is well built to enjoy Elite to the fullest? I have been using the X52 pro since launch and in fact bought it originally when I was playing Star Wars Galaxies! The Logitech pedals are pretty great and my top recommendation for mid-range options.
