The ancient Dragon Language also called Dragon tongue , [1] [2] dragon-tongue , [3] or Draconic language [4] is the language used by dragons. Text in the Dragon Language is found on walls in ancient dungeons and on burial grounds. With sufficient understanding, certain words can be incanted to produce magical effects such as conjuring fire, frost, or wind, slowing time, or pushing an enemy away. This ability is known as the Thu'um and is an inborn talent of Dragons and Dragonborn. Scholars posit the Dragonlings found in northwestern Tamriel are unrelated to true Dragons, [7] yet other sources claim they are kin. The language is structurally similar to English, with three exceptions: it has no equivalent to English's apostrophes, it tends to place prepositional phrases earlier in sentences, and verb tense is often ignored. For example, the plural form of "kel" an Elder Scroll is "kelle".

The Dragon Language , properly known as Thu'um, is the means by which dragons, and in fact the Dragonborn, use to breathe fire and frost attacks towards enemies. The player actually learns the language in order to gain the ability to do "shouts". One learns these abilites by raiding dungeons across skyrim and learning new words that are carved into the walls. There are 24 shouts of what we know , comprised of one, two or three words, as one continues to learn the language with the help of the Graybeards atop High Hrothgar. The player gains the words and shouts by reading them mystically off curved carved walls in dungeons and certain above-ground sites. Barrows are often found to have Thu'um walls. The Dragon alphabet consists of 34 distinct runic symbols.

Sometimes referred to as Dragonish, the dragon tongue, or Dovah speech, this language has become rare in Tamriel since the dragon's apparent extinction. The main character of Skyrim, the Dragonborn or Dovahkiin will be able to learn parts of the language, using them to cast powerful spells known as shouts. Interestingly, speakers of dragon language can calm Dragonlings with it. The alphabet consists of 34 symbols: there are 25 that map directly to letters in the English alphabet, and 9 that map to pairs of letters. The Dragon language does not have "C" as that sound is created by either "S" or "K. The shape of the letters is constrained by their need to be written using three large talons and a vestigial fourth digit called the dewclaw. Thus, each letter consists of at most three scratches and a dot.
