Grand Theft Auto IV 's story has two potential endings the player's actions can lead to, but one is vastly preferable to the other. Each ending results in some sort of loss, but the stakes for both are not equal, leading to one ending hitting in a more painful way than the other. Players who know what to expect will likely pick one ending over the other every time, and there are some legitimate reasons for doing so. Grand Theft Auto 4 has a reputation as one of the darker, more downbeat games in the series. It doesn't revel in irreverence and over-the-top setpieces as much as other games in the series. Even the game's art style features more muted colors compared to its vibrant successor. This also follows through in the game's ending. No matter what choice the player makes, someone close to protagonist Niko Bellic will die at the end, with the chosen finale determining whether it will be Niko's cousin Roman, or his love interest Kate. One would assume that effectively choosing which of Niko's associates would die would be a very difficult decision. However, this decision was not as balanced as Rockstar may have believed when the game was in development. While both endings have their share of bitterness, one manages to be far better than the other for a few reasons. Roman and Kate both play a role in GTA 4 's story, but their roles and strength as characters are far from equal. Roman could cameo in a future GTA title with few complaints, while Kate is much more forgettable in the grand scheme of things. The balance between the two characters is completely skewed in one direction, and players are likely to notice that. Roman is there from the very beginning of the game, greeting Niko as soon as he arrives in America, being the person Niko is closest to, and getting involved in a large amount of missions.

This encourages Niko to join him in America, where Niko discovers that Roman lied about living in paradise; his cousin is actually the owner of a small, gritty taxi firm , a small, roach infested apartment in Broker , and has large gambling debts, owed to the Albanians and Vladimir Glebov. Roman later marries Mallorie Bardas. He is the nephew of Milica Bellic.

Because of this, it is recommended to save on a different file after the mission One Last Thing or That Special Someone so that you can easily play the other ending without having to replay the whole game. This page lists the events of both endings. Both the endings end with the two main antagonists , Dimitri Rascalov and Jimmy Pegorino dying. Roman advises Niko to Deal so he can use the money to trip to Vice City and leave his life of violence behind him. Roman said Darko did not help and neither would Dimitri. Kate tells Niko to refuse the deal since he shouldn't turn on his own promise to himself for money. Both advise Niko to a different decision, and ironically, the one Niko takes advice from will die in the end. After Niko deals with Darko in the previous mission, he gets a call from Pegorino. Niko meets him at Honkers.

Kate, however, urges Niko not to do the deal, claiming that he should not sacrifice his principles for money or take his chances with Rascalov. After this phone call is made, a green dollar sign icon appears on the map for the Deal option, and a red dagger icon appears on the map for the Revenge option. To make their choice, the player simply enters that icon to start the first mission of the chosen ending route. They drive to Port Tudor where the deal is to take place.
