There are so many skill trees to choose from in Divinity: Original Sin 2 that it can be hard to figure out where to start. Some trees give players access to healing, a few give access to many status effects, and others are great for dishing out a ton of damage. Not only do people need to choose their skill trees, but the skills of their companions as well. That is why players should know which skill trees they might want. Some major research might be in order if players want to avoid starting over. The Polymorph skill tree is one of the best in the game to use for specific skills, but it's not extremely great by itself. They can help turn the tide and set status effects on enemies often. Spread Your Wings can help players maneuver around the battlefield with ease. Other skills, however, require more specific situations and won't be used often enough for players to employ them effectively. This ultimately leads to people only taking a couple of skills from this tree. The Necromancy skill tree falls into the same category as the Polymorph skill tree. It has some great skills that can help change the outcome of a battle, but many of them rely on other skill trees or certain situations to be useful.

Out of all these only the skills belonging under combat abilities can be improved by investing points granted upon leveling or by finding appropriate gear. Note that categories are not exclusive; skills may belong to warfare and pyrokinetic category and may also be regarded as source skill. Pure source skills are skills that rely solely on the use of Source and do not rely on any combat abilities such as Hydrosophist for example. These skills in particular are abhorred by the Magisters and using them in their vicinity may draw their ire.
Skills in Divinity: Original Sin 2 are actions or spells that are used by characters to cause a particular effect. Skills remain largely unchanged from the first game, with key differences to account for the changes implemented to the combat system, notably the introduction of Source Points. In Divinity: Original Sin 2 , skills are primarily learned by reading Skill Books , either purchased or stolen from vendors or found as loot throughout the game. Crafting books is now also possible, by combining empty skill books with skill scrolls or combining two books to create entirely new skills. Characters can learn skills as soon as at least one point is invested in that school's corresponding Combat Ability , with the caveat that the number of usable skills on the field is dictated by the characters' Memory stat. Stronger skills need additional levels in their required Combat Abilities, and crafted skills need points in both of their component schools' Abilities. Note that bonus Ability points from buffs and equipment count, but skills will be rendered unusable should these bonuses no longer apply and fail to meet the requirements. Skills are no longer tiered by difficulty; the more powerful they are the more Memory slots they occupy. Skills can also be found in equipment, some of which are unobtainable elsewhere. Elves , with their exclusive Corpse Eater ability, can also acquire skills by reliving the memories of specific corpses.

Mixed source skills are skills that rely on both source and prowess in combat abilities like Warfare. In order to use these one must have enough prowess in said ability and enough source at hand in order to use these. These skills more often than not are also harder to remember and therefore may cost more Memory Slots. Special skills are skills that have special criteria in order to be used.

However, in terms of sheer practicality, only a few Summon Skills seem to stand out as great utility options. Decaying Touch.
