So for me the arrival of summer is really exciting, not just because it means spending more time relaxing on the beach, and having fun in family trips but also because the kids will be spending more time with us and we will have the opportunity to work on their Spanish. There are no bilingual schools in our small town.

Discovery Familia has always been one of our favorite channels, dedicated entirely to Hispanic mothers and the things that matter in our lives Discovery Kids has programing geared to kids years old that is not only entertaining for but also educational. One of the greatest wonders and gifts of childhood is that children have this passion for discovery, they are curious and inquisitive and eager to learn everything there is to learn about the world. My little guy loves to ask questions and find out how things work and why, he catches bugs and then draws them with as much detail as he can, he is always filled with wonder when he discovers something new. My daughter loves to travel, to meet new people and learn about new cultures and new places. In here room a huge map of the world covers most of the wall.

However, all opinions expressed are my own. I have a little guy who is just crazy about math and I know that programming like this really stimulates his creativity and his problem solving skills. With STEM science, technology, engineering, and mathematics skills being on the decline in the United States; it is especially important to start creating a love for these skills while kids are still in their formative years. This is something that the team at Discovery Familia understands well. I had the opportunity of meeting them some months ago and visiting the Discovery Familia offices in Miami and I realized is that all of the awesome content that Discovery Familia offers is made possible by an amazing group of women, all of them moms like me and all of them interested in providing the best quality educational programming for kids. What I did not know is that even though by Latinos will make up 30 percent of the US population their participation in STEM careers is way below desired levels. I know that high quality educational programming like the one offered by Discovery Familia has awakened in my son a real love for mathematics and has helped him with his creative thinking. This year he started Kindergarten and while other children are learning his numbers he can already add and subtract and wants to move on more complex mathematical concepts. All of this programming is designed to prepare preschoolers for the world that surrounds them. Once we have completed the lessons in Spanish I am planning to introduce my children to French, I always wanted them to speak 3 languages and having a website like PetraLingua, that is easy to navigate and that they like and enjoy makes it so much easier to introduce a new language even if no one at home speaks French.
