Timeless with a twist. Melding a classic yet contemporary interior from which to appreciate a jaw-dropping view of the city skyline, this family home was designed to last a lifetime. Responding to a brief for the ultimate in quality of finishes and furnishings whilst mindfully avoiding a gallery of showpieces, we grounded our aesthetic in the European inflexion of the architectural language. Layering an energetic and warm palette with the selection of playful art, we balanced fine materiality and specification of timeless bespoke furniture pieces, to carefully shape a resounding sense of home for this busy family of six. Shaded by a heritage Eucalyptus tree, Cove House embodies sophisticated, modern Australian living. The home has undergone a complete structural overhaul thanks to Sydney-based design studio Decus Interiors , now bowing down to its waterfront views. The team have placed emphasis on natural light and a layering of materials and in doing so, reconnected the home with its surrounds. Adjacent to the kitchen , the dining table is complemented by a timber bench and the J77 Chair , designed by Folke Paalsson for Hay. Decus Interiors have found their niche in the waterfront suburbs of Sydney , designing awe-inspiring interiors that deeply resonate with their location. In their Cove House, designed for a young growing family with a passion for entertaining, the open kitchen , living and dining room take centre stage, positioned at the rear of the home. Spanning 13 metres, the living space is illuminated by full-height glazed doors that open up onto the generous terrace, complete with an outdoor bar and pizza oven. An informal dining setting features the J77 Chair for Hay , and the private study nook to the right of the kitchen maximises an unused corner of the home away from the action of the main living area. In order to bring natural light into the home, the ceiling was raised to include a pop-up copula structure over the formal dining table. A bespoke green marble credenza custom-designed by Decus partially separates the open area from the piano room, also doubling as additional hidden storage. The kitchen features the Muuto Nerd Bar Stool and the private study nook maximises an unused corner of the home.

Decus Interiors steer clear of the typical beachside home aesthetic in their Coastal Home, lifting design cues from surrounding native Australian flora and an extensive collection of Australian artwork. On a long stretch of scenic coastline in Western Australia lies Coastal Home; a heritage beach house with a three-storey addition and pool cabana. Entrusted with the redesign of the existing home and the new build, Decus Interiors have successfully merged the old and contemporary through a warm and sophisticated approach to family living. Stainless steel appliances from Wolf enhance the robustness of the chocolate kitchen cabinetry , setting the tone for a similar interplay of traditional and modern interiors that follow. Alexandra says she built depth through layering, working with the bones of the original heritage house by integrating warm, rich and inviting colours in the study and kitchen. The dining room is located in the new addition , with natural light streaming through full-height windows. Steel frame doors offer access to the sizable pool and entertaining area , featuring an integrated barbecue, outdoor dining setting, outdoor living area and outdoor fireplace. Inside, the Extrasoft Sofa by Piero Lissoni for Living Divani featuring bold cushions custom-designed by Decus Interiors injects colour and personality into the neutral space.

Alexandra Donohoe Church creates elevated, inviting homes punctuated by exceptional pieces of art and furniture. September 12, Alexandra Donohoe Church was barely a teenager when she began to avidly peruse the furniture catalogues that filled up the mailbox of her family home in Seattle, where her Australian parents had relocated when she was seven. Despite this clear portent of a career in interior design, Donohoe Church began a degree program in landscape architecture after finishing high school in Sydney, to which the family had returned when she was It was a full-fledged love affair. In , Donohoe Church started her own business, working alone from her apartment. It was a nerve-racking time, she says. She began with small projects and collaborations, gradually picking up bigger commissions — and the staff to handle them. A bit of tension in a space is very important for me. I like a bit of competition, a conversation between art, furnishings, space and exterior architecture. The pandemic, remote working and the lockdown that Australia is currently undergoing have presented challenges, but they had an upside as well, Donohoe Church says.
