Dead Man is a American acid western film written and directed by Jim Jarmusch. The movie, set in the late s, dead man johnny depp, follows William Blake, a meek accountant on the run after murdering a man. He has a chance encounter with enigmatic Native American spirit-guide "Nobody", who believes Blake is the reincarnation of the visionary English poet William Blake. Described by Jarmusch as a "Psychedelic Western", the film is shot entirely in monochrome.

Both the soundtrack and the film's score are written and performed by Neil Young. Young recorded the soundtrack by improvising mostly on Old Black , his famously customized electric guitar , with some acoustic guitar, piano and organ as he watched the newly edited film alone in a recording studio. The soundtrack album consists of seven instrumental tracks by Young, with dialog excerpts from the film and Johnny Depp reading the poetry of William Blake interspersed between the music. The soundtrack differs from the film score in that it uses background noises of a driving car while the film is set in a time before automobiles were widely available. Young speaks at length about his creative process in recording the film's score and soundtrack in his memoir, Special Deluxe.

It is appearing online for the first time. Dead Man was reissued last year by and is now available from Criterion. An engraver and printer by trade, Blake controlled the means of production, ensuring that his unique and eccentric work would always find a way out into the world. That record had the low-end, distorted guitar played somewhat softly and the honky-tonk piano but also similar themes—death, the corrupted American myth, Native Americans, industrialization as destroyer…. Dead Man is a very simple story on the surface but there are so many things the film is about—history, language, America, indigenous culture, violence, industrialization. I wanted these things to be important but in a peripheral way. The film has a lot more levels than any of my other films but I wanted to stay focused on the simplicity of the story and let those other levels coexist without one taking precedent. Filmmaker: Was it a concern of yours that your William Blake, played by Johnny Depp, is such a passive character? I wanted to work with Johnny in advance but he only arrived a day before shooting. Filmmaker: Well, he does ultimately step into his role as an outlaw. And I think [the change] happens too because when Nobody leaves him alone, something happens to him that is not told to you by the film. When he comes out of the tunnel and he and Nobody ride through that cathedral-like redwood forest, the next scene is the trading post. Filmmaker: Are you there kind of director who finds the film in the cutting room or do you do the montage in your head as you shoot? When I go in the cutting room, I have a pretty good idea of how a scene was intended to be cut together.

Roger Ebert gave the film one and a half out of four stars, noting "Jim Jarmusch is trying to get at something here, and I don't have a clue what it is". Shooting is like cutting up big pieces of granite that are sort of in dead man johnny depp right shape of the thing you want to sculpt out of them. Does Johnny Depp ever reach that state? His homonym, William Blake was a self-proclaimed prophetic poet whose work revolved mainly around two elements: the Bible, which "represented for him the Great Code of Art, the total form of what he called the Divine Vision" , and what he called his Vision or Intellectual Vision, "a comprehensive story of how mankind fell into its present condition, what that condition was, and how mankind was to be freed from all conditions, particularly from the confining context of nature. Then when that scene was over, I'd walk over from the piano and go play the organ for another scene and then - a little pump organ I have, and then I'd pick up the electric guitar again and get all my distorted sounds out of that to go with the Indian drums and the things that were happening in the film.
