The film, the Algerian nominee for the best foreign-language film Oscar and the winner of a special acting ensemble award at the Cannes Film Festival, follows a group of indigenes from Algeria to Morocco, through Italy to Provence, and finally to a village in Alsace, where they station themselves in anticipation of joining the invading Allied troops. These men consider themselves French citizens, but the French military treats them as second-class soldiers, denying them equipment, promotions, even tomatoes with their rations. Officers exploit their fervent patriotism, making promises they have no intention of keeping, to motivate the "wogs" to fight and die for the "fatherland" that treats them like bastard children. As is customary for this kind of genre picture, the main characters are not much more than types, but the actors are splendid at fleshing them out. Said popular French comedian and sitcom star Jamel Debbouze leaves his impoverished life to enlist in the Army, becoming a personal assistant or man-servant to Sgt. Martinez Bernard Blancan. He's a small, quiet man, a poor illiterate peasant as rough as the perpetually heavy black stubble on his face. Loyal to his sergeant, the only person of stature and authority who has ever taken notice of him, Said is outwardly humble but has a fierce temper when his dignity is insulted. As he proudly recounts his battlefield exploits to a young Frenchwoman, Said's tale of heroism climaxes in a passionately declaration: "I free a country and it's my country. Even if I've never seen it before. It's my country. The women of France, he fought for them and they should be his, too.

The movie then moves to the present day. It turns out that Debbouze is actually one of the film's producers who contributed a bit of money to the film's production, so it appears they could not avoid using him. Their unit commanders are "pied-noirs", Algerian residents of French ethnicity, including their sergeant, Martinez. The men are formed into an army. They first see action in Italy where they are tossed at German gun positions as cannon fodder by heedless French senior officers.

The film deals with the contribution of North African soldiers to the Free French Forces during the Second World War and with the discrimination against them. The film's release contributed to a partial recognition of the pension rights of soldiers from former French possessions by the French government. In French North Africa in large numbers of men from France's overseas possessions have been recruited into the French First Army of the Free French Forces to fight alongside the other Allies against Nazi Germany and liberate France from occupation. With him are other Algerians including Messaoud, who wants to marry and settle in France, and the literate Corporal Abdelkader, who seeks equality with settlers for the indigenous people of his country. There are also two Moroccan brothers Yassir and Larbi, Yassir's aim being booty so that Larbi can afford to marry. Soon the men, dressed in mostly lend-lease American uniforms meet Sergeant Martinez, a battle-hardened pied-noir , who trains them before leading them on their first engagement against the Germans in Italy. Their mission is to capture a heavily-defended mountain, but it soon becomes clear that their French commanding officer is using them as cannon fodder to identify artillery targets. The colonial troops eventually succeed, at the cost of high casualties. When asked by a French war correspondent about his thoughts on the losses, the French colonel replies, "today was a great victory for the Free French Forces".

There are several effective scenes of combat and the ending somewhat resembles that of "Saving Private Ryan". Nora Habib. See 'Days of Glory' for the rarely told historical story of cultural despicability that occurred during WWII but don't anticipate anything close to seeing a 'great film'. Scores of them drop dead in their tracks, but the waves of specks keep advancing until they seem unstoppable. And it's not just love, but sworn allegiance to protect at all costs. Instead, they give him the previously mentioned virtually useless handgun. At times too the subtitles were non-sequiturs not seeming to be connected to what the characters were actually speaking about. It left me with deep respect to those men of little education but full of monumental pride and dignity. The film touches very private interaction amongst "foreign" and French soldiers, but also their different ideology amongst themselves as some wanted to be French others wanted their own identity. He looks like one of the villainous chumps one might find in a Laurel and Hardy short but his character is complex.
