Hello again. So, this is the second installment of this column, which turned damsel disney to be a lot longer than what I expected it to be.

But, by the time The Little Mermaid came out, it definitely was. As opposed — the implication was — to those earlier princesses who were just so darn passive. But the funny thing is, a lot of the issues the newer films are overtly fighting back against never actually appear in the earlier movies. The notion that the early Disney princesses were passive damsels in distress is so ingrained in our culture that even people who love the princesses tend to believe it. Take Snow White, for example. Upon learning that an evil queen with magical powers wants to have her killed, she shows up at a house full of strangers and makes an entrepreneurial bargain with them to save her own life.

Disney has taken many hits for their portrayal of women over the years, particularly in regards to the Disney princesses. Most of these critiques are quite deserved. However, there has been a shift at the Mouse House recently, one which shows the writers at Disney may have been listening to the critiques all these years. Brave 's Merida has finally given us a strong, competent "princess" who little girls can be proud to idolize. And, with Frozen on the horizon, hopes that this trend will continue are high. Could the days of the Disney damsel in distress be over? When I was a kid, I never wanted to be a princess when I grew up. I played along — the pink dresses, the tiaras, but it was never my life's ambition. While I loved a good princess flick, I was drawn to the stories where the female protagonist was an active part of the plot such as Peter Pan , Dumbo , Robin Hood , and Alice in Wonderland. I'd like to think that was a conscious decision — the early feminist showing in my three-year-old self.

In Damsel , Elodie tries to escape the conventions of her own story. Trapped in a world of manners and expectations, the princess seeks adventure and longs to prove her independence. The conceit is familiar: A handful of recent films and TV shows have given audiences royal women eagerly subverting the tropes of medieval romances. The Princess starred Joey King as the titular royal who roundhouse-kicks her way out of an unfortunate betrothal. These stories feature active princesses, heroines who understand they must deliver themselves from distress.

But director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo smartly subverts those expectations into something more. With some stronger core relationships woven in and a plot that slowly puts a spin on the usual conventions, Damsel turns into so much more than a typical fable shake-up, evolving the fairy-tale twist to the next level. Even from the get-go, the tone is a little different. So she enters marriage with an open mind, even though the audience can pick up on something sinister going on. Her father Ray Winstone , who initially sold her off, comes back to save her, realizing he did wrong. Elodie and her sister have the sweetest, tenderest relationship in the movie. And her stepmother played by Angela Bassett , who could very easily fall into evil-stepmother tropes, especially as she and Elodie clash a bit on how to present themselves to the royal family, genuinely cares about her well-being. And she throws down her sword.

The film is a marked departure from its predecessors because Ariel is the first truly rounded princess. Tiana in The Princess and the Frog dreams of opening a restaurant; finding a man is not in her plan. And, with Frozen on the horizon, hopes that this trend will continue are high. Enter the Shrek franchise and its princess: Princess Fiona. Unfortunately, this is the guideline Disney followed even as the business and society changed around them. I think the only Princesses who are actually close to being damsels in distress are Ariel, Belle and Jasmine. Notify me of new posts by email. That being said, when fairy tales are rewritten so that the damsels in distress are in control of their own story, they essentially stop becoming damsels in distress. While all of them do have a Prince Charming figure in their movies, the Prince Charming figure does not influence their personalities in the beginning of the film. Combine hope with desires, strengths, flaws, and other character traits, and soon it eventually forms the basis for a strong protagonist. So, what makes someone a damsel in distress? It's actually about the choices and sacrifices a young woman must make as she grows and matures and she just so happens to ride a horse and shoot a bow. In addition, she can definitely give Shrek a run for his money with her belching. This makes sense; back before feminism became mainstream, women were expected to be nothing more than submissive housewives, and the media would center female characters who were basically submitting to the will of the story. Even with these flaws, Ariel paved the way for a new breed of princess. So why this topic? Type your email…. Brave is not so much about overcoming any one thing. At least, until Fiona sees what Shrek is hiding inside his oniony self.
