I had to hammer them with a rubber mallet to carefully straighten the pegs and make sure the parts where snug and aligned. The box says you need no tools. The box is stapled together and you need to use a screw driver to pry these things apart. The Phillips head that comes with the kit is lame, you will want to use a real screw driver, but the included tool does work.

It's easy to clean and my little rat babies have 5 times as much space to play as they did before. To me it seems horizontal is easier than the vertical bars that my guy would sometimes slide down if he loosened his grip. Overall, the opinions are mixed, and it'd be best to have someone help you assemble the cage. They love it!
