The street is named for the family of Oloff Stevensen Van Cortlandt, who arrived from Holland in and became a brewer, with the family eventually amassing a great deal of property and influence. Jacobus purchased the vast estate in the northern Bronx where he built a mansion that stands to this day, and much of the estate became Van Cortlandt Park.
