The coat sheds water, keeping me dry and comfortable. The coat isn't heavy in terms of weights, but keeps me warm like a heavy coat would. It also seems like it is actually warmer than my old Columbia down that is heavier and I spend a lot of time in ice rinks. You can always remove it later. Probably worth it if you needed it.
