Colditz is a British television drama series co-produced by the BBC and Universal Studios and screened between and The series deals with Allied prisoners of war imprisoned at the supposedly escape-proof Colditz Castle when designated Oflag IV-C during World War II , and their many attempts to escape captivity, as well as the relationships formed between the various nationalities and their German captors. One of the locations used in filming was Stirling Castle. Wing Commander Marsh Michael Bryant , an assistant to the British Medical Officer, decides to use his extensive knowledge of mental illness for an escape. He proposes to "go insane" and be repatriated. Colonel Preston agrees to let him, so long as he follows through with it to the bitter end. Marsh does a very thorough job: his bizarre, disruptive behaviour continually annoys the other allied officers, who are mostly unaware of the scheme. However, the Germans are not convinced, and Ulmann asks a Corporal to observe Marsh closely. The Corporal has a brother who is insane, so Ulmann believes he is a better judge of Marsh's condition than any doctor. The Kommandant initially refuses to allow the Swiss authority to examine Marsh but relents when Marsh's evident madness embarrasses him in front of an important visitor. By the time the Germans are willing to consider repatriation, Marsh has done such a convincing job that even the Doctor is uncertain whether or not Marsh is simply pretending to be insane. After Marsh has been successfully repatriated to the UK, Colonel Preston receives a letter from Marsh's wife, revealing her husband's feigned psychosis has become genuine, and that he has been committed to a mental hospital for long-term care, with little hope of recovery.

Colditz is a two-part television drama miniseries , based on the book Colditz: The Definitive History by Henry Chancellor , and the Channel 4 television series Escape from Colditz. It is not claimed to be historically accurate. The series tells several stories of various, mostly British, prisoners of war in the Second World War and their attempts to escape Colditz. In reality the escape team were discovered when they attempted to exit a manhole. The Germans threatened to throw grenades down into the sewer chamber and, as the escapees could not reverse back up the sewer pipe, they were forced to surrender.

Major Pat Reid was the head of the escape committee at Colditz , the castle near Leipzig used by the Nazis as a PoW camp, and the war hero's input on this BBC series gave it an extraordinary level of authenticity. Sure, most of the names have been changed, many of the characters are composites and a few of Reid's fellow captives complained about his loose loyalty to actual events — but the day-to-day details, the daring escape attempts and the dynamic between captive and captor all ring true. And Reid did actually escape, crossing the border into Switzerland in A co-production between the BBC and Universal Studios highly unusual at the time , Colditz is a fine example of why British TV was considered the best in the world back then. But then good actors were a necessity in those days. The time, budget and technical restrictions of the era meant that most scenes had to be performed in the manner of a play, using long takes rather than constantly cutting shorter ones together.
