Clay Puppington is arguably one of the most explosive, developed and serious characters ever put into a comedy. The show mimics the s show Davey and Goliath primarily through critiques on religious fanaticism and blind conservatism. Clay is just one of the many people in the town of Moralton with deep seeded flaws and insecurities. Further into the series we get to dive inside the dark mind of Clay. We see how much of an alcoholic he is, his marriage disintegrating, traumatic past and present events, and his extramarital affair. The comedy purely lies in that moment of jaw-dropped disbelief where laughing seems to be the only way out of the discomfort. He is the son of Arthur Puppington and Angela Puppington , the husband of Bloberta Puppington and the strict, abusive, and alcoholic father of Orel Puppington and Shapey Puppington , who tries to keep his home in line with a 's style of living. He hates his job as mayor of Moralton, as well as his children, marriage, and father. Clay is a man with a painful childhood, an unpleasant past, and a lot of regrets. He's a deeply depressed, frustrated individual who never learns from his mistakes. He is ill-equipped to deal with life's problems and takes out his anger or frustration on his family, friends, and the whole of Moralton.
