Chevy 366 problems
We've got a mid 70s C with a engine in our sprayer tender truck that we can't get to run right. It ran fine last summer when we were spraying but then dad used it to haul water to cattle through late summer and now it won't run right. When we got it out last fall it idled rough with a miss and when ever you gave it a little throttle it would cut out with no power at all. We've check for spark at each spark plug and that's okay. We rebuilt the Holley carb, put on new fuel filters and a new fuel pump as well but it still runs the same. When the truck is running it smokes blue smoke and it doesn't start right. When you crank it over with the starter most of the time it won't start, it will sputter but only at a flat idle, if you give it any gas or choke it won't fire at all, if you pull start it it will start in the first '. I tried putting a timing light on it but the front engine mount makes it impossible to get to the dampner to time it unless it can be timed off the flywheel too? I think my next plan of attack is electronic ignition and new spark plugs. Does anybody have any ideas of what to look for or what to check? Cliff, sounds like the starter is draging and taking too many amps and have you checked the rotor in the dist. While you are at it, check the condition of the points. Good luck!! Hey Cliff, any pics of your setup of tanks on that truck? We're trying to set up a truck just like yours with a few tanks and a pump

Did they put a short deck distributor in a tall deck motor? Someone here will know way more than I do about that, but the truck engines took a longer distributor. A short one wouldn't engage the oil pump drive. At least that is how I understand it. Someone set me straight. Yep, exactly my thoughts when I read this. Now the decision is do you put that much money into a 42 year old truck or put it toward a better one?

The truck probably ran at least 30 minutes of idling and 3 miles on the road with the new hei. It was fully retired after ish when it was no longer legal to transport kids. Tried to start it, and it acted like the starter was locked up. Coasted into the driveway. Thank you for visiting HeavyEquipmentForums. It's locked up. It was designed specifically for large, heavy vehicles that move at slow speeds like school buses. You can only run it like a dog, and it's limited to that capacity.
