Dr Julian and his sidekick Sister Benita treat a pensioner with a broken ankle and a former miner with a chronic lung condition. After being knocked off his motorbike on his way to work, year-old Peter is brought and is taken straight into resus, where Dr Chris Yeoman takes the lead on his care. Peter's blood pressure is dangerously low and he's also badly damaged his ankle so he's taken for an urgent CT scan. In Paediatrics, an ambulance rushes in with five-year-old Ruby, who's suffered multiple epileptic seizures and has a high temperature. It's a hectic start to the afternoon shift for Sister Benita, who's running the hub on her first week back from maternity leave. An ambulance arrives with year-old Barbara, who was rushed in after collapsing in her garden, while Dr Josh Gemmill tends to year-old former miner David, who has a large haematoma on his arm.

A patient is rushed into hospital suffering from serious burns, and he needs to be doused with water to try and stop the burns spreading further on his body. Meanwhile, a year-old woman needs an emergency procedure after having a fall at home, and a nine-year-old girl has an X-Ray on her hand to check for any signs of a break. The waiting room in Barnsley Casualty is overflowing today: Resus is crowded and there are no spare beds in the hospital. Sister Jane, who's running the hub, will have to juggle patients to make room for new emergencies. Fifty-two-year-old warehouse worker Wojcieches is rushed in by ambulance after suffering an epileptic seizure at work.

The series focuses on the professional and personal lives of medical and ancillary staff at the emergency department ED of the fictional Holby City Hospital. Jon Sen and Liza Mellody continued their roles as executive producer and series producer respectively. The series also features the departure of the show's longest-serving character, Charlie Fairhead Derek Thompson. A publicity officer told Joe Anderton from Digital Spy that this was decided to preserve the quality of the show. Anderton's colleague, Sophie Dainty, expected that this would become an annual break, having reviewed previous mid-series breaks. A promotional trailer for the show's return was released on 23 September with confirmation that it would return to broadcast later in Jon Sen continues his role as executive producer ; his resignation was announced in October
