Season 3 of The Killing will begin production in Vancouver on February A year after closing the Rosie Larsen case, Sarah Linden is no longer a detective. But when her ex-partner Stephen Holder 's search for a runaway girl leads him to discover a gruesome string of murders that connects to a previous murder investigation by Linden, she is drawn back into the life she thought she'd left behind. Creator Veena Sud recounted she derived many of the plot details from Mary Ellen Mark 's photography of homeless and at-risk children, especially in her book Streetwise. The killings alluded to Gary Ridgway , a Pacific Northwestern serial killer of dozens of women and girls who were kidnapped from the streets. The Killing is an American crime drama television series that premiered on April 3, , on AMC , based on the Danish television series Forbrydelsen literal translation The Crime but also widely known as The Killing internationally. AMC announced the series's cancellation in July , but picked it up for a third season after a renegotiation with Fox Television Studios and Netflix. The Killing was again cancelled by AMC in September , but Netflix announced in November that it had ordered a fourth season consisting of six episodes to conclude the series. The first season covers the first two weeks of the investigation of the murder of local teenager Rosie Larsen and has three main storylines: the police investigation into Rosie's murder, the Larsen family's attempts to deal with their grief, and the fluctuating electoral fortunes of a political campaign that becomes embroiled in the case. The season resumes the investigation into the murder and reveals secrets about the Larsen family as well as a possible conspiracy within the campaign race and the Seattle police department.
